About

Julie Gianotis is a Sydney based artist with an endless curiosity about people and a strong interest in exploring the human condition. Having worked as a portrait photographer for over a decade has strongly influenced her sense of design and the ability to portray mood through the use of lighting and composition.

She enjoys painting abstract and figurative landscapes in oil with emotional narratives, exploring the complexity of life and relationships. In her figurative work she enjoys imparting tension between the figure and the landscape to increase intensity.

Influenced by personal history and the stories of others, she cultivates her ideas from a core emotion or theme, which develops as the painting unfolds.

She prefers viewers to draw their own conclusions about her paintings based on their unique life history, rather than implicitly stating their meaning.

Julie is influenced by symbolist artists and draws particular inspiration from the artists Edvard Munch, Gustav Klimt and Frida Kahlo.

Her interest in portraiture and anatomy led her to study at the Julian Ashton Art School from 2014 to 2017. She has sold works to both private clients and at various art exhibitions in Sydney and Canberra.
